Renowned as America's sweetheart and affectionately known as "America's Grandma," Betty White was a trailblazing television pioneer who captured the hearts of millions. From her early days on radio, to her captivating performances on live television, and her unforgettable roles in sitcoms like The Mary Tyler Moore Show, The Golden Girls, and Hot in Cleveland, White radiated charm and endeared herself to a devoted fan base.

For years, I had been tirelessly working on a project to showcase White's extraordinary career and share untold stories with EW readers. Ideas like a "Betty White Time Capsule" filled with personal photos, scripts, and memorabilia were floated around, as well as a grand anniversary piece to celebrate the milestones of her iconic shows in 2020.

Unfortunately, circumstances prevented these plans from coming to fruition, and then the pandemic further kept us from being able to meet with White. So, "Operation Protect Betty White" was initiated, prioritizing her health and safety.

As White approaches her momentous 100th birthday on January 17, 2022, EW is planning a special digital cover story to honor her remarkable life and career. To gather insights for the feature, we reached out to White's longtime agent and friend, Jeff Witjas, who graciously shared questions on our behalf. Some of these queries came from White's former co-stars, including Jean Smart, Jennifer Love Hewitt, and Jamie Lee Curtis.

In this exclusive interview, White reflects on her numerous accolades, her deep affection for animals, the advice she would give to her younger self (at 80), and even her favorite indulgence—hot dogs. Even at nearly 100 years old, White's wit and charm remain as captivating as ever.

When asked about her earliest inspiration in show business, White playfully responds, "Boy have I got them fooled. For me it was Jeannette MacDonald. Because… Jeanette MacDonald." Demonstrating her love for animals, she explains, "I don't just love all dogs, I love all animals!" but admits to having a soft spot for Pekingnese dogs, like her beloved Bandit.

As for advice, White modestly declines giving herself any, remarking, "I wouldn't dare give myself advice—I'm too old! But seriously, the advice I'd give anyone at any age: Taste every moment. Don't take anything for granted."

Reflecting on her Emmy nominations, White reveals that she cherishes her very first one the most because it marked the beginning of her illustrious career. When it comes to flowers, she adores all varieties but has a particular fondness for the roses from her own garden, which were lovingly cultivated by her late husband, Allen Ludden.

As an animal lover and advocate, White shares her enthusiasm for The Pet Set, a show she hosted that celebrated the bond between humans and animals.

And when it comes to hot dogs, she simply enjoys them plain, without any additional toppings.

With a career spanning decades, White believes there's nothing left unknown about her. However, there is one intriguing detail she discloses—her admiration for the legendary Robert Redford.

Throughout her impressive tenure in the entertainment industry, White's passion for animals has been an integral part of her life. She has worked closely with various animal organizations and has served as the president emeritus of the Morris Animal Foundation since 2009.

As we eagerly anticipate White's centennial milestone, this digital cover story will pay tribute to the enduring legacy of a true icon. Betty White, America's sweetheart, continues to captivate audiences with her timeless charm and beloved screen presence.
