Country singer Tim McGraw has expressed his dissatisfaction with divisive political rhetoric in the United States and hopes for a return to civility despite political differences. In a TIME Person of the Week podcast interview, McGraw stated, "I want what's best for our country. I want what's best for the majority of people in our country." He emphasized the importance of every individual being able to live their life in the best way possible and urged for civility to be restored on both sides of the political spectrum.

McGraw, known for his passion for history, collaborated with Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Jon Meacham in 2019 to co-author the book "Songs of America: Patriotism, Protest and the Music That Made a Nation.

In addition, McGraw performed with Tyler Hubbard in a television special celebrating President Joe Biden's inauguration. This performance took place only days after the unfortunate events of the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol, where supporters of former President Trump stormed the building. Expressing his sorrow, McGraw described that day as one of the saddest in U.S. history and hopes it will never be repeated.

During the TIME interview, McGraw revealed his political leanings as a moderate Democrat who supports common-sense gun laws and the right to have an abortion. However, he also emphasized the importance of finding common ground, which he feels has become increasingly difficult for both sides. McGraw believes that the 24-hour news cycle and constant exposure to information through devices contribute to Americans feeling disconnected and divided. He encourages people to recognize that they are more alike than different and uses his music to convey that message.
